Role of the Office

From time to time you may question the action of a government department that directly affects you.  If you have had such an experience, you may benefit from the assistance of Ombudsman SA.

The South Australian Ombudsman is Richard Bingham, and it is his role to investigate these complaints against Government agencies and local government councils.

The Ombudsman is a completely independent officer who has comprehensive power to:

  • investigate complaints brought to him about government departments and authorities, and local government councils
  • review decisions made about the supply of public information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act
  • conduct investigations when the public have been refused access to local council meetings and
  • receive information confidentially from a person who wishes to inform about possible improper or illegal actions, without disclosing that person’s identity.

Should you have a complaint about a Commonwealth Government department, you should seek the assistance of the Commonwealth Ombudsman.
